Study Trip to Vienna

The Chair of International Law organized from December 6-8, 2012 a study trip to Vienna for fourths year students and Erasmus students taking courses Diplomatic and Consular Law and International Organisations. The study trip was organized under the leadership of assistant professor dr. Vasilka Sancin and carried out with the help of teaching assistant Maša Kovič Dine.

As part of the study trip we visited the UN Office in Vienna and attended insightful and interesting lectures from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). We also visited the headquarters of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), where the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Slovenia to the United Nations, OSCE and other International Organisations in Vienna presented their work and activities within the UN and OSCE. Defence adviser mag. Alojz Štainer also presented in great detail the activities of OSCE in their three areas of work: the politico-military, the economic and environmental, and the human, as well as Slovenia's involvement in these areas of OVSE's work. With interest we also visited the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Vienna, where Mr. Ambassador Aleksander Geržina addressed the students and answered to their questions. Finally, we also visited the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna and listened to the presentation of their postgraduate study programs.

We would like to thank Zavarovalnica Merkur, Law Firm Schönherr Slovenia, University of Ljubljana and the Student Council of the Law faculty for financial assistance for the study trip.

Reflections on the study trip by some of the students:

»The IAEA lecture was one of the most interesting lectures I have ever attended. Generally, it was nice to have professionals talk to us about their work in fields of their international activity« Ioannis

“I really enjoyed this trip to Vienna. I could discover some important institutions from inside; the United Nations is what I liked the most, with the lectures of the CTBTO and IAEA. In addition, the Slovenian Embassy and its charismatic Ambassador were quite interesting. And we even had time enough for sightseeing and enjoying La Bohème in the Opera!” Alejandro

»What impressed me the most on our study trip was our visit to the UN office in Vienna. The presentations held by the representatives of the different organizations have made the biggest impression on me because of their wide views on international topics and the range of activities each one of the organizations covers…I would also like to mention environment of the UNOV itself. I found the UN office in Vienna to be very pleasant because of the cultural, professional and educational diversity. It seems to me like a very interesting and great place to work!« Lana

“Visiting UN in Vienna was a great experience, thanks to distinguished lecturers who were opened for our questions and to staff who provided us with practical information regarding internship.” Marko

»It was so overwhelming to walk through the UN headquarters. I enjoyed the guided tour through the buildings. The presentations by the representatives of several organizations are for me the "peak" of the trip. In particular the presentations by the representatives of IAEA, CTBTO and UNCITRAL were really interesting and dynamic. Besides this "serious" part of the trip, it was breath taking to explore Vienna, with its beautiful architecture and its enchanting Christmas market!« Anastasia
