Places to visit

Dear participants, you are welcome to visit some other places in Slovenia, besides Ljubljana, its capital city. Although geographically rather small the treasure of Slovenia lies also in its diversity. Please find below some suggestions of places worth exploring (more attractions at http://www.slovenia.info).

BLED

Distance from Ljubljana: 54 km

Bled is one of Slovenia's most popular tourist resorts. Its most distinctive features are a lake of glacial origin famous for a little island in the middle, and an 11th century castle. Bled became a popular tourist resort in the 19th century, when the Swiss doctor Arnold Rikli discovered the beneficial effects of its natural surroundings and founded a health resort there. The town is best known for its lake, Lake Bled, with a little island in the middle, where you can be taken in a traditional "pletna" boat, Bled Castle, which stands on a precipitous cliff above the lake, and the famous Bled-style vanilla-and-cream cake called "kremšnita".

SOČA RIVER VALLEY (BOVEC, KOBARID, TOLMIN)

Distance from Ljubljana: 130 km 

Due to its lush green colour, the Soča, one of Slovenia's most beautiful and cleanest rivers, has been referred to as "the emerald river". It is renowned worldwide not only for its unique beauty but also for its white water rapids offering some of the best adrenaline-pumping water sports experiences in this part of Europe, including rafting, kayaking and canyoning. The Soča river has its source in Trenta, a scenic alpine valley renowned for some of the country's most beautiful landscapes. The Trenta Museum offers an insight into the unique cultural and natural features of the area, parts of which are incorporated into the Triglav National Park. Several high-altitude ski resorts are located close by. The valley's numerous beauties and attractions worth visiting notably include the world renowned World War I Museum in Kobarid and the Kozjak waterfall, famous for an underground chamber with a pool of emerald water.

POSTOJNA

Distance from Ljubljana: 53 km

The town of Postojna is famous worldwide for its underground caves and the nearby Predjama Castle. The Postojna Caves, one of Slovenia's most spectacular natural sights, consist of a 27-kilometre underground system of passages, tunnels, galleries and chambers with wonderful dripstones. The caves, also famous for providing home to the olm (Proteus anguinus), an amphibian salamander endemic to subterranean waters of southern Europe, can be viewed from a small cave train.

LIPICA

Distance from Ljubljana: 80 km

The Lipica Stud Farm, founded in 1580 by the Austrian archduke Karl von Habsburg, was the world's first stud farm to breed Lipizzaner horses. Today it breeds exclusively horses of this noble breed and boasts a world famous classical riding school. Several horse riding programmes are available to tourists. The Farm's surrounding area, which has for centuries been used for the breeding of Lipizzaner horses, has developed into a culturally significant landscape, criss-crossed with nature trails.

PIRAN

Distance from Ljubljana: 122 km

Of the three medieval towns on the Slovenian coast - Koper, Izola and Piran - the picturesque little town of Piran with its Venetian design and a distinctive Mediterranean feel is the most beautiful. Its most impressive sights are the Cathedral of St. George, built in the 12th century, and the Tartinijev trg square, named after the famous Piran-born Italian composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini. A view from the hillock above Piran reveals the town's unique roofscape of slanted roofs and characteristic stone chimneys, numerous terraces, small squares and secluded gardens. Other distinctive features are the town wall on top of the hillock and several small churches and villas. Piran has a maritime museum and an aquarium. Seafront restaurants offer a large variety of seafood.
