Doctoral studies represent the pinnacle of academic achievement and are reserved for the most capable and dedicated students. Upon completing their four-year doctoral studies, students are awarded the academic title of Doctor of Science. At the Faculty of Law, students can enrol either in the doctoral programme in Legal Studies or the interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Environmental Protection. Teaching at the Faculty of Law is conducted in Slovenian. However, many faculty members offer individual consultations in English for their international doctoral students. Additionally, students may be granted writing their doctoral thesis in English.

Following amendments to the Rules and Regulations for Doctoral Studies at the University of Ljubljana, in force from October 1 2021,  students initially enrolled in a three-year programme who do not advance as planned will have the opportunity to continue and complete their studies under the conditions of the updated four-year doctoral study programme.

More information on the application and enrolment procedures concerning third-cycle studies at the University of Ljubljana is available here

Applicants with foreign higher education credentials must obtain recognition of their qualifications before enrolling in postgraduate programmes at the University of Ljubljana. This process begins with the application for study in Slovenia. Guidance on navigating the higher education system in Slovenia is available on the website of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation. The information on recognition procedures is currently found in the archive of the University of Ljubljana.
