Tilen Štajnpihler Božič

Tilen Štajnpihler Božič is Associate Professor at the Department for Legal Theory and Sociology of Law. He graduated from the Faculty of Law (university of Ljubljana), where he started work as a junior researcher, funded by the Slovenian national research agency (ARRS), and in 2011 obtained his PhD in legal theory and philosophy of law with the thesis “The Role of Judicial Precedent in Legal Argumentation”. Since then, his focus has been mainly on the interdisciplinary field of sociology of law. In this context, his research and teaching work focus on understanding law through the prism of sociological theory and social and political philosophy. He focuses on issues connected with social (in)equality and the role of (anti)discrimination law, the institutional position of courts, including the process of judicial decision-making and legal argumentation in general, the process of legal education, as well as legislative drafting and procedure.

He is actively involved in several research projects (see below), collaborating also with the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana and the Institute of Comparative Law. He is a member of the editorial board of the Ljubljana Law Review. He was a substitute member of the Expert Forum of the European Institute for Gender Equality (2009-2012) and a member of the Expert Council for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities (2014-2018). He completed a number of short teaching visits abroad, at the Universities of Trieste and Catania (Italy), Tartu (Estonia) and Gdansk (Poland), and in the summer semester of 2023 he was a Visiting Scholar at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Oñati (Spain).
